Pollex Review (Pre-Release)

A reading of the Steam page — not a scored campaign. Q4 2026 is still ahead.

Pollex Pre-Release Review

Pollex is not out. A scored review would be a lie. This page is a pre-release review of the public pitch: what Kooky Studios put on Steam, what that implies for players, and who should wishlist versus who should wait. When the Q4 2026 build ships, we will add hands-on notes without deleting this snapshot.

For play advice, use getting started. For store timing, use the roadmap.

The pitch, compressed

Pollex is a single-player first-person horror game set in an underground thumb-war fight pit. You owe a debt you cannot pay. The only way out is the ring. You bet fingers. You grip, pin, and win, or you watch a finger come off. The house takes a cut. The deeper you go, the stranger the pit, and the less you have left to gamble with.

That is a complete fantasy. It does not need a twelve-hour skill tree to be interesting. It also does not prove the fantasy plays well for three hours. Wishlist if the sentence “childhood thumb war, but the loser loses a finger” grabbed you. Wait if you need a demo, a price, or a gameplay trailer with a verifiable YouTube ID — we have not found an official embeddable trailer to place in the middle of this article, and we will not fake one.

What the listing does well

  • A readable loop. Grip, pin, win, bet fingers, pay the debt. You can explain it in one breath. That helps a wiki, and it will help stream titles.
  • A stated craft standard. Built in Unreal Engine 5 by a solo developer. Textures, models, and sound are described as hand-crafted with no AI-generated assets. If that holds, it is a reason to care in a year full of sludge.
  • Honest mature copy. The body-horror warning is specific: finger loss as a core mechanic with visceral animation, plus debt, coercion, and duress. You are not ambushed by a vague “violence” tag.
  • PC floor you can test. Windows 10, Core i7-class CPU, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1070, DirectX 12, 4 GB disk. See system requirements.

What the listing does not tell you

  • Price. Unknown. Do not believe a random reseller.
  • Exact length. A solo UE5 horror can be 90 minutes or 8 hours. The copy emphasises descent and attention, not chapter count.
  • A control scheme. We drafted a conservative layout on controls and marked it as unofficial.
  • Whether a pin is a QTE, a physics lock, or a timing game. The verbs are clear; the implementation is not. How to win stays at the level of tells and tempo until we can see a bind.
  • Codes, battle pass, or live service. None are listed. The codes hub is empty on purpose.
  • Extra players in the ring. Not listed. Do not buy a second copy for a friend expecting couch two-player.

Who it is for

Wishlist if you like first-person horror that is about a social game going rotten: debt, crowds, and a house that never loses. Wishlist if you are tired of gun-forward horror and want a mechanic that lives in the hands. Wishlist if “no gen-AI assets” is a purchase filter for you.

Wait if gore of digits is a hard line. Wait if you only play 30-hour RPGs. Wait if your PC is under the GTX 1070 / 16 GB line and you were hoping for a Switch port — none is listed. Wait if you need English plus other official languages; the Steam language table currently shows English interface, audio, and subtitles only. This wiki still localises articles for readers, but the game client is listed as English.

Fairness check

Pre-release pages often invent systems. This review refuses to grade combat depth, boss quality, or story endings. It grades communication. The Steam page communicates a loop, a tone, a spec, a date window, and a content warning. That is enough to wishlist intelligently and not enough to call Pollex game of the year.

The developer note is personal and short: the idea would not leave them alone. Solo games live or die on whether that obsession survives production. Track updates for delays. Q4 2026 is a window, not a day.

How we will update this review

After launch we will add: session length, whether tells are readable, whether the house systems feel like coercion or like padding, and whether walking out whole is a real ending or a joke. We will keep this pre-release section so you can see what was promised.

If you only read one companion page after this, read how to survive. The pitch is already trying to keep you in the ring. A good review should tell you that before you pay.
